The Sun as a MHD generator: a new heating mechanism for the coronal loops and closed magnetic structures?
نویسنده
چکیده
We investigate a possibility of heating of the loops and other closed magnetic structures in active regions of the solar corona by the flow of solar wind (plus other flows that may be present) across the magnetic field lines (that are perpendicular to the flow), in a similar manner as a conventional MHD generator works. A simple model is formulated which allows to calculate the typical currents generated by this mechanism. This enables to make a judgement whether the loops in solar active regions can be heated by the proposed mechanism through associated Ohmic dissipation. It is shown that if the heating region width is of the order of a few proton Larmor radii then the heating of coronal loops could be explained under this conjecture. This effectively means that a loop is represented by micro-threads with width of a few proton Larmor radii. Other implications of the model, such as a predicted spatial heat distribution along the loop are discussed.

متن کاملNonlinear wave heating of solar coronal loops
Theheating ofmagnetically closed structures (loops) in the solar corona by the resonant absorption of incident waves is studied by means of numerical simulations in the framework of nonlinear resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is shown that the dynamics in the resonant layer is indeed very nonlinear for typical coronal parameters. The effect of the nonlinearity on the efficiency of the re...

Long-time high-resolution simulations of the dynamics of a coronal loop in cartesian geometry are carried out, within the framework of reduced magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD), to understand coronal heating driven by motion of field lines anchored in the photosphere. We unambiguously identify MHD anisotropic turbulence as the physical mechanism responsible for the transport of energy from the large ...

We present the Ðrst model of resonant heating of coronal loops that incorporates the dependence of the loop density on the heating rate. By adopting the quasi-static equilibrium scaling law o P Q5@7, where o is the density and Q is the volumetric heating rate, we are able to approximate the well-known phenomena of chromospheric evaporation and chromospheric condensation, which regulate the coro...

Cool stars such as our Sun are surrounded by a million degree hot outer atmosphere, the corona. For more than 60 years, the physical nature of the processes heating the corona to temperatures well in excess of those on the stellar surface have remained puzzling. Recent progress in observational techniques and numerical modeling now opens a new window to approach this problem. We present the fir...
